Our kind of Tube Top

Family Day at Soldier Hollow February 21, 2011

Dinner provided: hot dogs, chili, chips, and a brownie

That's the meal Jimmy so stock up Buddy Boy.

One of the best parts: sitting back and enjoying the ride to the TOP in the TUBE.
In order from front: Grayson, Ava, Mallerie, Graham, and big Momma bringing up the rear.
We took turns staying with Callie Marie on the kiddi hill. You have to be 3 to ride the ropes.

Love is in the air (our Valentine's weekend)

Friday February 11th:
While Matt and I were enjoying an adult dinner at Shafer and Lindsey's, Mallerie decorated the door to Ava's room -out of the blue. Shafer and Lindsey hosted our 4th NKAAFN (here I go with my acronyms again). Both Shafter and Lindsey had gone to great lengths to have the house party ready. She had details of love everywhere! Just look at that spread! Shafer had been playing handyman in the kitchen by rearranging the configuration of the island. Just four hours prior the granite had been installed -in the nick of time for me to set my punch bowl on to mix up some love potion. The recipe called for club soda but I couldn't see it at Smith's so I got lime flavored tonic water. The punch brought me back to what my grandma Taylor used to make. I tried to recreate it for my family on Valentine's day but this time I used club soda from Day's. What a blessing that I couldn't find it for the adult party because it made the punch taste awful! Katrina dumped a cup of sugar in the bowl just to make it go down. Anyway, back to the adult party. Shafer and Lindsey had a questionnairre for us to answer. Aside from one of the papers catching on fire the questions weren't necessarily "hot." But one of the questions was to share the most memorable Valentine gift to your spouse. My hand shot up as I told how I was sneaky and got Matt's ring engraved without him knowing it. It wasn't till I was well into the story that I realized, hmmm, maybe I can't share every detail out loud. (I was afraid my story might catch fire). I made a few revisions to make it party appropriate but Matt and I got a laugh out of it later. Lindsey made some gluten free peanut butter bars for dessert. The pan was quite large so I took two home. They were just the thing for after church on Sunday. Matt and I ate them alone in our room. Hehe.
So as I mentioned there were details of love everywhere including heart pin-ons with personalized initials. I wore it again on Valentines. Cause when else am I going to wear it?

Earlier in the day I had helped in Ava's class Valentines party. I brought Growlie and they rotated with the groups and had a great time. Above Callie is entertained by a live pup. The owner told me it is a Maltypoo (Maltese Poodle mix). She said she chose it over the Shitsu Poodle mix because she didn't like that abbreviation as much. This is where some acronyms might come in handy.
At my station I did my madlib/conversation heart game that I made up when Katrina was in 3rd grade. I like that I have something standard I can do for any party by now. It's like having my party pants always pressed and ready to go. Graham's interest in the games only went so far and he found himself loving technology more.
I think I committed to too much on this particular Friday. That morning I had taught art in Grayson's class then came home to get the kids from Matt and go back for Ava's party. I ran to King's and Smith's after that and came home to find a message from our realtor saying we had a house showing in an hour and a half. With all the the cleaning I had to do, there was no way I could be back to Ava's classroom, to teach Meet the Masters at 2 but I knew for a fact that the other mom was going to be there. Instead, I intercepted Katrina at the bus stop so she didn't walk in on the house hunters. (In the end our house came up as the 2nd choice...for the third time.)
Saturday February 12th: I attended a baby shower in SL for cousin Sariah. It's funny, this cousin is due next month with a baby, and just this week I myself had a new cousin born when my Uncle Ross and wife Suzy had a new baby girl. It's interesting to see the generations overlap.

Sunday February 13th:
This 9 o'clock church is making for some very long days.

Monday February 14th:
On Valentine's Day when I went to get the (gag) club soda from Day's, Growlie fell in love with the heart balloons. Graham accidently let his go right away and it floated to the top of the grocery store ceiling. The cashier was gracious to hand him another but I made sure I tied them fast to their writs before exiting the store. Those balloons have brought just as many tears as smiles to this household.

Dinner was made somewhat hectic that evening for Valenitine's only because I was also making some for a new baby on the street. Well, not for the baby, but the mom and family to eat. The hectic part came when the teriyaki chicken in the crock pot was nowhere near done when it needed to be. (Sound familiar Jamie?) I threw it in a frying pan and was able to leave the house at six o'clock on the nose to walk kitti-corner with Matt and our yummies. When the compassionate service lady had asked me if bringing dinner to someone else on Valentine's Day would work out, I assured her that it's actually the perfect day to spread some love.

Because of the triple batch of sugar cookies I had made for Mallerie's fund raiser I had no desire to make more for Valentines. Luckily, the phantom doorbell ditcher left two Pepperidge Farm cakes on the doorstep. Funny thing, I saw the boxes for them in our garbage can outside...

Monday February 7th:
The last thing I'll mention on this Valentine post is the Magic Penny. My siblings will remember hearing my mom sing this song "Love is like a magic penny hold it tight and you won't have any, lend it spend it, and you'll have so many, they'll roll all over the floor." When we did FHE at the Care Center Matt held up this cube and asked, "What good are the pennies stuck inside?" Then he taught how if they were out of the cube they could be lent and spent and therefore, would mean a whole lot more. Love is the same way. And since it was just in front of the old folks, our family SANG that song.  Picture everyone singing in a different key to a different tune or not singing at all. It was AMAZING. The elderly were refreshed on the story of Alma baptizing in the waters of Mormon and then teaching the new members that their hearts should be knit as one. We gave out the paper valentine "knit" baskets with candy hearts that we had made. Instead of playing button/button at the end this time we played penny/penny. Watching Graham wait with his hands pressed together and his EYES pressed shut was adorable. Matt brought up that this would be the opportune time to do my half penny trick that I had done at Cade's birthday/talent party. I did. When one of the old gals saw the half penny she said, "That's against the law."
 Happy Valentine's Day People!

Update on the Family (aka Brag Blog) Feb 2011

Katrina:
On Thursday she attended a conference at UVU for FBLA. Here I go with my lettering again: Tha'ts Utah Valley University for Future Business Leader's of America. The tests were already assigned to them as to which they would take. Out of the three she took, she placed in all three! This came as a suprise to her since she said some were rather difficult. After Katrina accepted her first certificate she was almost back to her seat when they called her name again in the next cateory, so back up she went. She was almost to her seat for the second time, when yet again they called her name. Good on ya, Kat. Really, she has a very smart brain. She said for the 17th year in a row WHS won Region.

At her school appointment with her councelor just the day before he broke down the percentages of her tests, which put her in the top (single digit) percent of the country for her learning ability. That said, he got on her a little bit for a couple B's she got last term (which is very unlike her). You would be right in asking the question about now, "But Abby who are you to think a B isn't great?" And you would be fair in asking. But her councelor simply and clearly explained that if you are in the top percent in your learning ability then your grades should be higher than the the top 20%. She agreed that at least in one of the classes she could have done a little better. It's hard though since she's in AP and Honors classes. But like her councelor said, "No excuses." The councelor commended Matt and I for both being there at the appointment. We also had Graham and Callie with us who were feeling rather lively at the time crumbling granola bars all over the floor. When we had all walked in the school Katrina moaned, "Why such a large group?" Her councelor continued to say that he would have welcomed the whole family. I don't think he had enough granola bars in his desk for all of us though.

She spoke in Sacrament Meeting last month and really wrote a beautiful talk from her heart. Several people have told me to pass along  to her that they really enjoyed it. Katrina also presents herself well. And the Bishop asked for a copy.

Mallerie:
She has joined the Builder's Club at school. At the last meeting they decided to do a service project by having a bake sale during school lunch. The proceeds would go to Super Dale. A local wrestler who was paralyzed recently during a warm-up at the High School. The doctors don't know if this is a permanent state but meanwhile the medical bills are mounting. The community has really stepped up in helping to raise money any way they can. I was glad to be able to help in someway as well. I had meant to take the family to the dinner fundraise the previous Monday but we were asked to do FHE at the Care Center last minute. Both worthy causes.
So on Wednesday I spent the day while the kids were in school making a tripple batch of sugar cookies and icing and decorating them. That night Mallerie had YW and was fretting how she would fit in time to make the cookies. I said, "Do you WANT to make them?" She said she didn't really feel like it but it needed to be done for the next day. She was releived when I told her I had gone ahead and made them all while she was at school. Matt helped me carry them into the office the next morning and she was able to sell all of them at lunch.

We failed however to attend Mallerie's Parent Teacher Conferences. It was openhouse style rather than by appointment and she insisted it would be like the last time where there really wasn't anything to talk about. And since I always prefer to stay home it was easy for her to talk me out of going. Her grades couldn't be any highter, and really, it's Mallerie, what are they gonna say?

I know they would probaly say she's spunky. She was rewarded for something at school, and got to do the dance game on the Wii during lunch. She was up there with a friend getting her groove on with the school gathered around chanting, "Go Mallerie, go Mallerie!"

One thing I don't have to say, "Go Mallerie" on is her Personal Progress for YW. She is very self motivated in this and will come up and have me sign off something she has been quietly working on for weeks.

Ava:
Her 3rd grade teacher sure went on and on about her at the SEP (Student Educator Parent) Conference. She is smart and happy and helpful and a good friend. What more can I ask for?

The big 3rd Grade Disney Program is coming up next month and Ava will be in several numbers as all the kids will be. I was put in charge of making 2 Frog Costumes for this. I had put a check in the box indicating I can sew but figured this would mean mending previous costumes or following simple directions. Instead I had to come up with an idea on my own and put the costumes together. This has been on the back on my mind. So last week I dragged out my craft box and by using a pattern from another mom at the school (life saver!) I put something together. Still though, when I look at them I can't tell if they are fine or wacky. Least I can honestly say it's my best effort. Ava is appreciative and likes them so in my mind, mission accomplished.

She seems an old soul for 9. We have no problem leaving her with the kids for short amounts of time if the older girls are gone and she can do a job well. Still, Katrina said we baby her too much. Like that she only has one dish night a week. I reminded Katrina, "When you were 9 you didn't have a dish night at all."

Ava also is on the rotation for Family Night lessons. She was always with someone last year but this year we moved her into her own spot. She suprised us by giving a very well thought out lesson with visuals and activites. Both Matt and I agreed that neither one of us could have pulled off such an evening at age 9.

Grayson:
He's gone and got himself awarded as one of the Students of the Month. His teacher told me at SEP's how much fun he is and how cooperative he is in class. Last Friday I was in there to teach Meet the Masters and I have to agree that he's great. She gave us a folder of "Fry Phrases" which are phrases she wants him to practice reading fast. She shouldn't have told me this was optional because since then the folder is still in the back of the van (2 1/2 weeks later).

He just finsished Junior Jazz. He was always so excited when he scored a basket and was a good sport. There wasn't any score keeping and I liked that. This boy is obsessed with anything sports related!
He has a money jar where he says he is saving for his mission. He got telling Graham about it and Graham started asking all kinds of questions about missions. In the end Graham asked, "Mom can you come on my mission with me?" But I'm glad at least Grayson is talking to him about it and it's in the future plans.

Graham:
We eat pizza every Friday night. Either Papa Murphy's, homemade, or frozen. Once in a blue moom we've even been know to order out. Since he only likes cheese pizza Matt takes the pepperoni "off." It took us a while to realize what he was asking for when he'd say I want "off " pizza. "Oh, cheese?" we'd ask. "No, OFF pizza." So now when he askes what kind we are having I always just say, "off pizza." "Yeah! It's my favorite!"

He was assigned the scripture in Primary for the first time as a Sunbeam. On Saturday Matt kept going over it with him, "For Behold, this is my work and my glory to bring to passt the immortality and eternal life of man." Moses 1:39. Matt kept repeating it till Graham said, "That's enough of that." He just needed a little break because later he would say he was ready to work on his scripture again. At the mic in primary he got up so confidently when they called his name that Matt hesitated in the wings as to wether he should go help him. Graham got right up there, "This is my work and my glory." It was the CUTEST thing.

This boy is obsessed with anything train related! During Grayson's b-ball game he would walk along the side black lines with his fists balled and his bent arms going back and forth saying, "chug-a-chug-a choo choo!" He got an ear infection in January and the doctor was making small talk with him. When the doctor learned he likes trains he asked what kind Graham has, "Electric, magnetic, battery powered, wind up?" I told him, "All of the above." While we were in the waiting room Graham climbed into an empty toy box so all I could see were his smiling eyes out the handle holes. I got laughing so hard at this as I waved to him. Really, this child couldn't be an sweeter. And to top it off he LOVED taking the antibiotic. Easy breezy kid.

Callie:
She's great but she's also two. Something set her off during scripture reading the other night. This could have been as simple as someone adjusting her tutu. She stormed up the hall and slammmed the door. When it came time for her to read I said, "Callie, it's your turn." She didn't say anything but I could tell her face was right under the door, I began ,"And it came to pass," She repeated, "...came to pass." She continued to "repeat" the scripture from behind closed door before deciding to come out with a sheepish grin.

When I am leaving out the door she puts on one thing after another till she is decked from head to toe with a hat, necklace, tutu, and purse. We went into the hardware store and the employee said pointing to Callie, "I like this statement!"

She loves to be tucked in like Bob at night (all the four younger kids do). We laughed as a family when we watched What About Bob? The part I immitate is Richard Dryfus trying to wake up Bill Murray who plays Bob, "Bob!," he bounces him up and down on the bed, "Bob!" more bouncing, "Cockadoodledoo!" At night Callie runs to her bed, "Do bob-bob!"

She is the luckiest little girl to have both her mommy and daddy in nursery with her. She doesn't even know how lucky she is!

Matt:
So we wondered if we would ever know if Matt would have stayed on at Gatorade or if in fact he had made the right choice in going back to Frito Lay. Well, finally now that it is the middle of February, he got a call from his former colleague who told him, "You made the right choice." She explained that out of the 24 who were employed at he time, only 12 were left by the time they had to make cuts since so many like Matt had jumped ship. They widdled the 12 to FOUR. No RSL's (Retail Sales Leader's) were kept on. Phew. He made the right choice.

Matt and I were watching Grayson's Junior Jazz game and I noticed a lady towards the back who I don't know. She was still there as the game ended and was behind us as we were walking out of the building. She suprised us by saying, "I enjoyed watching you two, the way you talk to eachother and look at eachother, you can can tell you are really in love, it makes me think I should go home and do better." Huh? I was trying to think how we were possibly acting but just said, "Thanks for saying so!"

(PS: A couple of people have asked if Matt likes being in Nursery. He said only if I'm in there with him. Maybe this lady is on to someting...)

Nursery Time

After four years Matt has been released from the EQ presidency. During one of the last lessons he taught he said someone's child, who was suppose to be in Nursery, was running around making a ruckus. I reminded him, "That is who I teach my lesson's to!" He knows now. He was put in Nursery with me! The other couple was released. At least I don't have to wonder now who the nursery leader is. There were ideas I had but I didn't want to seem like I was over stepping my bounds since neither of us had been specified at the 'leader'. Following in my mom's footsteps from when she was Nursery Leader I sewed a table cloth. Last Sunday we got there a little bit early because now we are the first ward that meets in the building. I set the room up with a few toys. That way I didn't feel like I had to run unlock the closet after Sacrament Meeting. Sometimes I like to chat with the speakers briefly for example. Matt did great. We have changed the schedule around as well cause best as I can tell, we are the leaders. Like I've always said, "Put me in charge or I have no interest." This is gonna be just fine.

It's just Funeral Potatoes!

The compassionate service lady called me last week and asked if I could make some food for a funeral. I asked what the hardest thing to get people to bring is, she said, Funeral Potoes. So I said, put me down for some a them. She said the family was planning on 200 people so if I could be sure to make a big pan. The morning of I decided to make a double batch, which required it to be put in my large roaster size pan. I looked at the clock and realized that I didn't have to bring it to the church for 2 1/2 hours so I may as well wait to put it in the oven so it would be nice and hot. I covered it with foil though so little fingers couldn't poke at it. Time got away from me a little and I hurried and put them in the oven an hour before I had to be at the church. The recipe said they cook for 40 minutes though so maybe I was timing it just right. I checked them when the timer went off and realized I had left the stupid foil on the top. Also because of the large pan they were in when I felt the center it was still cold. I uncovered them and cranked up the heat. I got to the church as soon as I could but as you can imagine the luncheon was already WELL underway. There was only half a pan of potatoes on the table so I went ahead and placed mine with those. After that I had some grocery shopping to do. On my way home a RS sister was unloading pans in front of my house. I pulled over to save her the trouble of having to come to my front door. She appologized that no one came back for seconds and she was returning the entire full pan of potatoes to me. I assured her it was FINE. Inside the kitchen I divided the still warm potateos into two smaller pans to freeze. Graham saw me doing this and said in the MOST sympathetic voice, "Ooooh they didn't eat any of your potatoes mom? They didn't like them? I want some." So I dished he and Callie some. He kept commenting how good they were, "Why didn't they like your potatoes, I like them, Callie likes them." I started getting a little complex going on. "It's not that they didn't like them, they just had too many potatoes." This must have appeased his sorrow for me because before long he was off playing with his trains. I looked in his bowl to see quite a bit of potatoes left. "Graham you didn't want to finish your potatoes?" "I don't like them.,"  he shrugged. I guess his compassion only goes so far.

His and Hers weekend getaways to Hurricane (Hur-i-cun)

First up: Mwua. For Sadie's birthday, those of us that could got away for a girl's trip to sunny southern Utah. It was sunny but not hot. However, it felt extremely warm at 58 degrees compared to the -8 temperatures Heber had been at. Lindsey Geertsen's in-laws have a second home in Hurricane that they were kind enough to let us use. We left on Thursday January 6th, Sadie's big day. I left Matt at home with the babies and a few other kids as well. It was my designated day for play group and instead of having me reschedule, Matt said, "I'm you." The 'hitter/pincher/biter' didn't show up so I knew he could handle it. Besides, I was downright giddy to get out of town. This post  coming after my posts of loving to be shut-in may come as a surprise, but I'm human too. Sadie and Lindsey arrived at Lindsey's and we loaded all the luggage into Matt's car, which he had generously offered. He even put new tires on the morning of. The sisters were as antsty as I was to get outa town so you can imagine their dismay when I found myself being forced off on an exit in Spanish Fork. I reminded the sisters, "I'm still the same old Abby!" A quick U-turn and we were back on track with thankfully an uneventful trip down south. After some Cafe Rio and settling in we went to Lin's, the local grocery store. The bakery was having a special. The only reason this caught my ear was because the employee was as unprofessional as can be, stumbling over his words with long pauses, "Ummmmm." This did remind us though that since it was Sadie's special day we needed to get a cake. (Unfortunately none of us was going to pull one from our suit case). We were nearly to the checkout when this guy from the Bakery gets back on the speaker, "Ladies, come on back for our deal." We turn to see him waving us over as he talked into the phone, "All the doughnuts you can fit into a box for $2.99" That was a deal Sadie couldn't pass up so she set the cake down to go get a box of  doughnuts instead. A lady in a wheelchair was speedy quick and got to the case before Sadie and took all the doughnuts with sprinkles. Errrrr. But with some fancy arranging Sadie was able to get our box plenty full. With that little adventure out of the way, we were off to the movies! I don't know who we thought we were, Siskel or Ebbert, but we analyzed our movie up and down and back and forth till it went from, "That was stupid!" to "That was a pretty good movie."
The point of this trip was to relax and not have to fix food or pick up after kids and it proved to be exactly that. Lindsey Taylor's grandparents who are renting a home in St George for the month of January invited us ALL to lunch. "Lindsey, are you SURE?" "Yes, they keep saying for me to bring all of you." We didn't want to be rude so we met up at Applebee's for some oriental salad that nearly had me asking for a bottle of dressing for my beverage! We also got to see where her grandparents are renting and visit a bit before our session at the St. George Temple. Aside from a sealing I haven't been through that temple. It was full of history and pioneer heritage. We met a mother and daughter outside who were on their way from FLORIDA
to Salt Lake. We took their picture, they took ours.
We got some shopping in at the mall and TJ Max before dinner at 5 Guys. At TJ's Lindsey and Lindsey each bought a large item: one an oil painting, one a large frame. "Are we going to be able to get these in the car Abby? Will they be a problem?" I thought about it, "Not for me!" I don't know how they managed, but both items made their way up north. Oh, and on the note of 5 Guys, don't ever surprise Sadie by taking her there. She don't like it. It wasn't too crowded, which provided nice acoustics for Lindsey's singing. Oh how we got laughing over our mushroom burgers. During this trip we discussed anything and everyting, deep topics to lighter ones like, "Maybeline has a nice soft eye pencil."
The next day's destination: VEGAS. You may remember my delight at finding an H&M store in Chicago last summer, well the nearest one is in Las Vegas so that was our sole destination. We debated back and forth in the car as we left St. George as to whether we had enough gas. We all decided we had PLENTY. Now, this story doesn't end with us running out of gas but we did get awfully close before I pulled off at one of the only gas stations between the two destinations. I now know we definitely did NOT have plenty.
We spent so long in H&M that Sadie finally declared, "Okay guys, I've seen everything in this store five times." Without even realizing it Lindsey and I bought the same black and white flower and we both had them on at church the next day. Crazy Las Vegas. We could have stayed in the quaint little shopping center by H&M for dinner but we decided to head in to the strip. Let me reword that, We could SHOULD have stayed in the quaint little shopping center... We ended up at the Venetian for dinner. Again, without realizing it, we were where the Adult Expo was being held. Can I just say, CRAZY Las Vegas. We got laughing to the point of tears on the way home at one incident in particular. Tears! (When we got back and Matt heard we had gone into Vegas he said, "Wasn't there some porn convention going on there?" I said, "I'm too embarrassed to tell you!" CRAZY but oh so hilarious). We did sneak a peek at the Bellagio fountains though before heading back to Hurricane. Since Vegas is a solid two hours away, Saturday also ended up being a day with quite a bit of driving but it sure goes by fast when there isn't a MOMENT of silence. If there was I'd just have to ask, "What else?"
While Sadie and Lindsey feasted on the chocolate cake Lindsey and I enjoyed Creme Brule.

It was fun to be able to come back 'home' and get into jammies and feed some more on that $2.99 doughnut box and stay up as late as we wanted laughing away. I had a hard time falling asleep a couple of nights because I kept laughing out loud when I thought of something that was said. The Geertsen's home is so comfortable and we each got our own bed. Since it was Sadie's special trip Lindsey put her up in the master suite. I used the sink one night and passed Sadie as she was reading in bed, "Yeah, you can just leave the door open,"she stated. I said, "Oh, so you want me to shut the door. That's an interesting way of asking." I could hear Lindsey chuckle from the living room. See, we kept ourselves entertained.
Sunday was church and tiding up before getting back on the road. At one point I asked the age old question again, "Do you think I have enough gas or should I fill up?" A moment of hesitation, then I remembered and decided, "Let's fill her up!"
I'm realizing that it may get confusing to read this and decipher which Lindsey is which, but I know, and they know, so that's all that matters!
(PS: Thanks Lindsey for the photos. I've had this typed in my drafts waiting to post till I could steal your pic's ;).

Two weeks Later: Matt found himself on a guy's trip in sunny Hurricane where they played 57 holes of golf in a day and a half! I didn't even know that was possible, or even an option for that matter. He drove down with Sean and had his share of stories to tell when he got back (like a speeding ticket from officer freindly). I'd go into his stories but after all, this blog is FROM MY POINTOF VIEW. So while he was gone, I managed to burn the ribs that were boiling on the stove and fill the house with smoke. Other than that, things were pretty uneventful and I was glad he was able to get away as well.
"FORE!"

Finishing Strong!

Baby you'll freeze out there...
Because outside was frightful it was an easy decision to stay in for New Year's Eve. Katrina was at the Stake Dance, Ava was in Sandy, and Gray was in Provo with the Geert's doing this:
We had some Goulding girls here as well so we repeated our "low table" from last New Year's Eve with some new configuring for the guests then ate chips and salsa, ham and cheese with crackers, veggies, and raspberry milkshakes by candlelight. Bacause after all, lighting is everything. Shake that!

Matt and I had spent the day at IKEA. Mallerie has since moved into Matt's old office but what is a girl to do with new bedding but no bed? It took us the next few days to assemble her new bedroom set, which any girl would be thrilled with.
Later we waited till the ball dropped before busting a lung outside. After several minutes of hollering and noise making Matt opened the door, "You are still out here?" Then he joked, "It's starting to get obnoxious." I said, "It's barely getting obnoxious?" I knew we needed to stay out much longer then! And we did. I was hoarse the next day. Happy 2011!
