Matt's 20th High School Reunion 10/8/10

Twenty years have come and gone since Matt graduated high school in California at Twenty Nine Palms High. Without being too pushy I encouraged him to attend (I knew I'd get a trip out of it myself). We left in the wee hours of Friday October 8th to head to Cali. We arrived without incident and were able to eat pizza with Grandma and Grandpa for dinner (more of our visits with them in another post) before Matt and I decided to go to the Homecoming game. He played football for TPHS back in the day but I couldn't talk him into wearing his football jersy. Ya can't really blame him. There was one fella from his class at the game that had a letterman jacket on with all sorts of medals pinned to it. He didn't seem right in the head though. We had put in a long day traveling and we were pooped but in the end he enjoyed seeing some pals.
This is John Lore. He was a Senior class officer that helped organize the weekend. Matt wasn't particularly close with him in HS but with a graduating class of around 150 he knew who everyone was. Jon asked where we lived and then noting Matt's BYU shirt asked the inevitable, "Are you LDS?" He hadn't known that Matt was a member in HS and that he even went to early morning seminary. John was interested in this because he joinded the church five years ago. He then asked what we are never asked, "Are you sealed?" It's like he's just found out this cool thing that he never knew about before. We told him we were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple back in 1994. He grinned big, "I'm sealed too!" He lives in AZ and he and his wife were sealed in the Mesa Temple. Real nice guy. But when we left Matt said, "He's the last person I would have thought would ever join the church."
We bailed on bowling afterwards though because we were beat.

The next day was the picnic in the park for families. Matt and I had paid for us to attend the reunion but the invitation to the park read, "Kids eat free." They didn't know what they were getting themselves into when we arrived with our six in tow (plus Grandma and Grandpa [though they brought their own subs.]) Yes we had the most children by a long shot. We were also one of the few who were on our first marriage and married for so long.
This is Jeff Mayers who was the class president.
The black and white photo of Matt second from the top is with this same girl, Brenda. She's now got a whole list of accolades and is very politcal. No man, no kids. Just her hat to look after should it blow away in the wind. She almost choked on her wine that evening, "You have six kids?"
Dinner that evening was at the fanciest place in the small desert town the Twenty Nine Palms Inn.
We dined with Debbie Walters and hubby Mike. She was the other girl member of the church in HS. Matt said it was hard to follow the council to date members only because she was pregnant! Matt commented about the Inn, "I don't think I've been here before." Debbie had, "My first marriage was here." She was a fun dinner guest. Debbie wasn't judging nobody.
Catching up with pal Summer. I almost put Summer Wheatly, but that's from Napoleon.
Matt was also a track star in HS. He ran with a good buddy Ronzelle. I was so glad to be able to meet he and his wife since they live back east (Marlene I think it was). They have been married for as long as us, which was a treat to hear. She was so sweet and fun to talk to. When we gave them hugs goodbye that night Ronzelle said, "If we are ever in Utah we'll look you up," I asked, "Are you ever in Utah?" "Nope!"

As the shot glasses for $2 a pop were being passed around after dinner I said, "How 'bout cuttin into that buttercream!" That's my guilty pleasure.

We boogied a little but mostly wanted to visit. The music got so loud that John motioned for us to join he and his wife Naomi outside. I haven't even downloaded the pictures from my camera because as soon as we got home there were new friend requests on FB and all the photos at the click of a button. I still love technology...

Meet me at the STATE fair Sept 17, 2010

Honest Abe. Katrina drew this center picture last year in 8th grade art using a graph technique (I wish Matt's computer let me zoom). She was quite pleased with how it turned out and asked for a frame when she brought it home. It sits proudly on her windowsill. Towards the end of school last year there was an incident that caused her to loose the privilege of having her own room downstairs temporarily. We asked her to bring her essentials up to the girl’s room where she would be sleeping. We were surprised to see Abe sitting on the upstairs shelf. He made the cut as an "essential." It was only natural for her to enter Abe in the county fair. To all of our joy Abe made it to the State Fair. We couldn’t pass up this opportunity to go and say hello. The county fair was in August, the state fair was in September, the 4-H department kept Abe for the time in-between. Katrina panicked, "when will I get him back?' I assured her, "You'll get Abe back, honest."

Mallerie's items that went to state were: her "Knot-a-quilt" she tied at Christmas and her girl’s camp bracelet. I felt a little like Katrina when I knew they'd be keeping it for so long. I put that bracelet on after girls camp because it was too big for Mallerie's wrist and I felt bare without it. The room was a colorful display of projects from all over the state. Aside from getting separated from Graham temporarily, we were all smiles.
And since we had come all that way, we couldn't very well go home without having some fun.
I was concentrating so hard on waving to Ava and Graham that I failed to notice that Grayson was also on the carousel. He did make this shot though-he's in his yellow soccer jersey towards the back. He just didn't get a wave from his mama. I felt badly about that.
The night was literally perfect. Mallerie pitched in some of her own money to go on the bungee jumper.

I don't know which is brighter the boys swords or Ava's shirt. It's a great shirt.

Party Pants Ava September 11, 2010

Ava turns 9! Oh how we love our Ava. We love her because she's our sweet daughter, we love her because she's so perfect, (we even love her when she's not perfect), we love Ava because there is so much of Ava to love. At her parent/teacher conference yesterday her teacher said, "This will be fast because it's Ava and she is so wonderful." Wonderful Ava. Ava had dreams of having her party at the Lion House with 12 freinds and family members (she's been to a party there before). Alas it was too expensive for this year. I talked her into another idea that she got on board with right away. She gave her friends a regular size invitation and also a miniature invitation. The mini one was addressed to "Your Favorite Doll." At the party there was a large tea table for the guests and a mini of everything for the dolls. You can bet Callie was never far from that doll table. I took way more pictures than this even and she is at that dolll table in ALL of them. She looked like the jolly giant.

Most of the girls brought their AmericanGirl doll. I did the hair of some of them.
The girls went out back and decorated tiny doll visers as a party favor.
Love this shot of Callie at that little table. Ava said, "She keeps using the cups and silverware!" I assured her the dolls wouldn't mind and that we should care about a real person's feelings more than a dolls. Besides, the guests had fun washing them in the sink to use for themselves. I should set this up for lunch one day. I know it would keep Callie busy for hours. Callie was soft and gentle for the most part and oh-so-interested in that tiny table.
After blowing out her candles on her cake, Ava blew out the tiny cake. There's Callie!

Sliced up, this Oreo cookie cake looked like a filled chocolate layer cake and tasted scrumpdillyumptious.

The doll cones were caramel Bugels. We used a tiny Ben and Jerry's for the doll cones to be scooped out of.
Ava had another plan set in her mind to go to Classic Skating as a family that evening. As the day wore on I knew it was going to be a bit of hassle and expense to go down to Orem. Besides, the day was so gorgeous that it seemed like we'd be breaking a commandment to spend it in a stuffy arena when here Duck Pond was at it's best. We took some chicken and a blanket. Our blanket. The one that a big black lady made for Matt on his mission. As Matt was folding it up he asked, "Can you imagine if we didnt' have this blanket?" I couldn't. The picture was to grim, to gruesome. I told him to NEVER make me picture our lives without that blanket EVER again.
I've mentioned before that I love this place haven't I?
Ava's new wheels. A few nights ago we went on a pajama walk. Well, the girls were on their beach cruisers. Now that Ava has this bike, all is well in the world. Just look at this sweet thing. Ava, not the bike. Okay, the bikes pretty sweet too. She hasn't taken it off any sweet jumps yet though.
