February

I can’t remember a time in my life where there are so many appointments. Lately we’ve had endodontist, orthodontist, dentist, dermatologist, aesthetician, pediatrician, and ER! If it weren’t for my trusty calendar and the friendly reminder calls I think I’d miss them all together. Luckily I have found something to do in the waiting room. You’ll remember my mom’s wristlets that she sold at the Craft air in October; well I learned to make some myself. I had learned to crochet at Enrichment a few years ago and thought if I sat down it would all come back to me. I spent a very frustrating day on the couch trying and trying over and over again to get it. Once you learn something it should stay in your head right? I was getting so discouraged that now I’m actually UNLEARNIG! I gave up and decided to FORGET it. Then a few days later I saw a crochet segment on BYU TV when I had an ah-ha moment and realized what I was doing wrong. Also thanks to the Internet I was able to watch demos on YouTube since I’m more of a visual person. I became a crocheting fool and made wristlets galore. I thought I would have more to give away but with my own daughters pawning for some and myself wanting a variety I have yet to get the amount made that I’d like. But I must say that when I have the time it’s very enjoyable and relaxing. I even watched a tutorial for a flower on top and it’s pretty sweet.

Also on BYU TV we are very into watching THE FOOD NANNY. I bought her book around Christmas and have implemented her program this year so far. I’ll follow up at the end of the year with my testimonial. In the mean time check her out on Thursdays.

Date Night!

We had such a fun date night at the end of January (29th). We had a gift card from Matt’s work so we ate at Maglebee’s. Our palate had been wet for their menu from earlier in the month when we had taken the boys to a BYU basketball game. Since the team scored over 80 points all we had to do was show our ticket at Maglebee’s and get free chocolate cake. What better way to top off free game tickets than with free cake afterwards? Since then I have wanted to go back. On this night however we were seated right under an air vent. We don’t go out all that often and I didn’t want to be cold under a vent. I mentioned this dilemma to Matt and by the time the waiter came back Matt said, “We’re going to sit over there.” We moved just in the nick of time and another couple was seated at our table. I watched the girl rub her arms the whole time trying to get warm. Better her than me. Though we had enjoyed the chocolate cake the last time, I can never pass up Crème Brule for dessert.

After dinner we were able to walk just across to the theatre where we saw in 3D ‘Avitar’.

There wasn’t any football, but Matt enjoyed it. And for someone who has zero interest in Sci-Fi I really enjoyed it too. We had such a great time that night. The moon was so full and bright as we were driving back up the canyon that I could literally see the outline of the trees on top of the mountain. The reflection off of the snow was such that Matt turned off the headlights as he drove. I still like him to show off once in awhile.

That Can’t Be Good For Anybody

The kids were off from school on Monday January 18th and I was just setting up Disney Yahtzee with Grayson when Graham took a tumble off the chair in the dining room. This happened right in front of me with no time to react. His chin the table HARD. As I was washing it at the sink I could see that the cut was extremely deep and ran down to Matt’s office. I made him get off the phone with whomever he was talking to, cause this was more important! He determined stitches were needed so we headed to the ER since it was lunch break for our Pediatrician (in this case lunch is more important). We had a bit of a wait and by the time the Dr. came in Graham was asleep and the butterfly bandage I had put on had held the would so tight that I almost suggested we go home. But once the wound was cleaned we could again see how deep it was and this obviously woke Graham up. Poor thing. It took the nurse, Matt, and myself to hold him still while he was stitched. I too hated every minute of it.

January Blahs?

No way! I love the slow pace of January after a busy December. With the sudden drop in excitement though we were left a little lost on one particular Saturday (1/16/10)…we had no plans…and we had a sweet tooth! Katrina was so “sweet” and for Christmas had given Matt a gift card to Cold Stone. Coming off that sugar high from December is brutal so we headed down to Cold Stone in Orem. It was SO crowded that we tried two others before giving up and drove to the Creamery on Ninth. Packed! Matt was certain there would be some ice-cream at the eatery in the Wilkinson Center so we walked around there but they were just closing up for the night. The Food Court was closing but the rest of the place was rockin. A dance was going on in the ballroom, and man do those kids look young. Maybe I just felt old. I remember going to the Wilkinson Center all the time with Holly in HS and now I had all these kids with me.

We ended up getting treats out of the cooler at Maverick. When you are picturing Cold Stone, a freezer burned strawberry pop doesn’t cut it that’s for sure.

Wacky Wenesday’s

Lindsey has what she calls “Wordless Wednesday’s” and now I have Wacky Wednesday’s. It seems that the days Matt is out of town seem to be the crazy times. This particular Wednesday was January 6th. As soon as I picked up the kids from school we headed down the canyon to an orthodontist appointment. Ava stayed behind so she would be able to walk to piano at 5:15 after Activity Days. We were done with the appointments and back up the canyon by 5:45 so that I could pick up Ava and drop off Mallerie at her piano lesson. Back at home I made dinner in enough time to go back up and pick up Mallerie. After dropping her off and making sure Katrina had a ride to YW, I gave Mallerie babysitting instructions and took off to Salt Lake. I realize I must really trust my girls to be able to do this and though I don’t make a habit of it, I do love having built in babysitters, oh so much. I was meeting up with my sisters for Sadie’s birthday. Brent was out of town as well. They were patiently waiting and waiting for me at Sadie’s but I wasn’t lying when I told them I got there as fast as I could. After the gift exchanges we ate at a Chinese place which we had all to ourselves. I hope they weren’t disappointed that we also had a coupon. We sorely missed Eliza who was still too queasy to join us. We especially missed her when we saw ‘New Moon’ afterwards. She’s most fun at that movie Lindsey informed us. But we managed some fun ourselves. Ashley had us laughing as she described Cade during the movie when they had gone with her family. He was so bored and restless that when Jacob took off his shirt to reveal his ripped bod Cade started clapping, “Yeah! This is a gooood movie!” Later he went and disturbed her grandma, “You liken’ this movie Grammy? It’s a good movie!!!” All while giving her a shoulder rub.

The very next Wednesday, January 13th, Matt was out of town again. On this day I picked up the kids from school, dropped them off at home, and then took Katrina to Park City to a dermatologist appointment. Again I was home just in time to get Ava and Mallerie back and forth from piano, dinner made, Katrina to YW, and then I headed to Orem. This was not a celebration like the week before had been. This was a viewing for my Dad’s uncle Karl Tucker. He was in his 80’s and had some health problems. His family had told us at the Christmas Party that he was on his last leg so many family members got to say goodbye personally, including my Dad. It was so great to see family there. Like they say, funerals are the best reunions. The next day I dropped Graham and Callie at Eliza’s (she convinced me she’s not so much queasy during the day) and went to the funeral in Orem. I wrote a pretty detailed summary of the funeral to my sisters afterwards that I may attach here Titled: If you want every detail of the funeral…read on.

I did take 'Growlie' to Eliza's for the funeral and it was so nice of her to keep them so long. I had to laugh when I dropped them off because her kids were on one side of the living room and mine on the other and they were just starring at each other. I drove off chuckling wondering who was going to make the first move. Eliza showed me the ultrasound picture she had just returned from getting: one baby.

I had to fill up on gas on my way to the funeral which put me arriving just as Linda was giving the opening prayer. The family section was full so I sat towards the back of the Stake Center, which was quite full but not all the way. I was soon joined by Rachel who had just arrived! Things always work out don't they?

Phil's mission companion spoke who was a close friend to Karl and Joanne. They met him in South Africa when they came to tour the mish and pick up Phil. This guy then moved to the states and whaddaya know Karl was able to get him into the "Y" even though he had a straight D average. He took advantage of the free room and board offered by Karl and Joanne (all the ice cream and cereal he could eat). He's obviously still strong in the church and bore a testimony even quoting Alma in saying that a place is prepared for the righteous. But other than his talk, the guy after him, and the brief Bishop's testimony at the end it wasn't so much a spiritual meeting.

The guy after him was the athletic director of BYU I believe (Glenn) and Daddy said he also spoke at Wayne's funeral. Rach and I thought he looked familiar. He had us roaring in the isles. He said Karl sure loved a party; especially when it was in his honor so let's get on with it! (As a side note he said it was too bad the Tucker's suffer from such a lack of self esteem). As you can imagine everything is ten times funnier when you are with Rachel anyway, and so we were out of control there for a while. He mentioned some term and said, "I'm sure most of you know what that means unless you are from Murray." I leaned to Rachel and barely got out, "Uh-oh, this is gonna set off a relapse for Chris, she's going to start banging her head against the wall." Rachel's response (though she could hardly talk she was laughing so hard), "We see the black blazer rise up from the audience..."

This guy talked about what an achiever Karl was in life besides excelling in baseball, tennis, basketball, football, and of course golf, he was also the student body president and played several musical instrument...and sang! He always longed to see Karl fail at something. Or better yet, NOT get away with something. He was referring to the fact that the ropes on the golf course Karl assumed were to keep the "other" spectators back. He never paid for a ski ticket, or a round of golf, he never bought his clothes or clubs. He just called up Taylor Made or Nike and got what he wanted. He did however have to buy a suit once since they don't make those. One time the two of them were together and Karl was trying to park in the VIP parking at Riviera (in LA) but the bloke in charge wasn't having any of it. Just as this man was about to see Karl fail, who pulls up behind them but Johnny Miller who yells out his car window, "Let these two guys in will ya!"

There were a couple of musical numbers. One was a piano medley by Oneil Miner (is he someone we should know?) It was really pretty but a bit lengthy. I've never heard the BYU fight song played so beautifully and reverently on a piano and it sounded almost ghostly with white carnationed "Y" up front.

Another was a cousin who sang a country song on his guitar. He had a strong clear voice that carried to the back just fine and sounded great. I told him this later. He seemed doubtful, "You could hear all the way back there?"

All four of Karl's children paid tribute through memories of their dad. Jackie referred back to when she gave Joanne a kidney. She said "dad" came into her hospital room afterwards and though she knew he had been deeply worried didn't carry on but they shared a special father/daughter moment. Then he looked at her food tray and asked if she was going to finish, because it looked pretty good to him. At that moment she knew all was going to be okay with [her] mom.

Daughter Shellie said she always felt a lot of love from dad but that they did 'have it out' more than once when he didn't approve of her college days. (She still seems just a 10-hour ride from fitting in at Circle-A to me, even that guy she had with her would fit in great there.)

Larry, I think it was as well as others, talked about how Karl really made each day the best: "That was the BEST ski run, this is the BEST lunch, That was the BEST round of golf, You are the BEST kid."

Phil: He noted that in looking over his dad's obituary that his dad never took jobs that made much money. He pointed this out to Joanne who replied, "I know..." But he said his dad's philosophy seemed to be that it was better to be in rich in friends and connections. This was true in the way they lived. Though they didn't have money growing up they lived like they did. A Vale Colorado skiing trip for their family cost $147.00. Another time he went to Palm Springs with members of the BYU golf team and played 36 holes a day on brand new pristine courses for free. In turn his dad always said yes to anyone who wanted something from him including golf lessons.

He named a lot of things he learned from his dad like going to church: as long as there was no snow on Timp, the golf courses were being re-seeded and the horse was too tired. Apparently he did however give a closing prayer once.

Jackie's daughter Kate represented the grandchildren and presented herself very well. The night before at the viewing when I was talking to her she said that this would be the largest group she had ever spoken to. She couldn't say enough about how great it was to be a grandchild of Karl Tucker and seemed to get special treatment from others because of his celebrity.

Joanne got up last in her black pantsuit. She's had a cold so she rasped out her sentiments best she could talking about how great it was that she and Karl both have such a love of sports. But after she had her first baby, Jackie, it was such a difficult delivery she was certain she would never walk again. Karl was coming for a visit and she was thinking along the line of roses. In he walked with golf clubs swung over his shoulder with her name on it. Whenever they golfed together they had to do all 18 holes. She said it always seemed nice to just golf 9 holes and then go to dinner. But she said to be careful what you wish for because towards the end of his life 9 was all he could do. My favorite thing she said was, "I know if Karl were here he would say, "This is the BEST funeral I've ever been too."

All the grandkids attempted to sing "Home on the Range" for the closing number but needed help from the congregation to get through it.

Their emotions continued outside while the casket was being loaded. It was sad to see his great grandchildren having such a hard time. Even the son's in law of Jackie had red eyes and at one point Annie asked her husband Randy, "Are you going to be alright?" Christian was there! Phil's X. She and Jackie sure had a tearful embrace. They were literally holding each other’s faces nose to nose just sobbing. She did the same with Becky though I didn't see her and Phil interact. I said to Chris at this point, "This is too sad seeing his family like this!" She pointed out though that it really tells something that his ex-daughter-in-law would come.

(There was a lady there that was seriously 7 feet tall. She was more than a head taller than every one else there. Now that is heartbreaking.)

This emotional scene continued outside for quite some time before people headed to the cemetery. The six Sullivan kids and some spouses had been to the funeral (the score is still even with us having high numbers at the viewing) but they were tired of waiting around and Chad was booking restaurant reservations on his blackberry for the siblings. By the time Mommy and I got up to the cemetery the dedication was about to get underway, we didn't have boots, it was so snowy and cold and we would have had to walk through the snow. Besides, LaRue was even just sitting in her car, so we went back to the church and were one of the first to dish up for the catered luncheon after Mike Tucker's prayer. I talked to Ann a bit and she said the cemetery was so crowded because of another burial from a suicide in the Alpine school district. That would explain all the school buses that were there. I don't know anything about that story but it didn't seem right to me to charter buses for that. It seems to be encouraging it almost.

The luncheon was so good: shrimp, sandwiches, salads, cake...Daddy summed it up well, "This is the BEST lunch I've ever had." He's a HEBER! Mommy noted that the RS had made a special attempt by having golf centerpieces, "And to say they didn't know them..." We sat with a lady that was familiar and acted like she knew me but I'll have to ask Mommy cause I gathered she was a Haye's. She pointed to me, "So Leslie, this must be your youngest daughter...then pointed to Chris...and this must be your oldest daughter...”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to eat and run though cause I still needed to get my babes from Provo and then bust a move on home to get the kids from school. I barely had time to hear how things went from Eliza but I did note her darling deco kitchen table, the brass lamps, the great TV table and new chairs, the recovered couch, and the girls pink room! Graham had found the three cars they own, which he was reluctant to give up. On the way home he told me, "I play with Samanta." I still don't know who made the first move but they were mingling well when I arrived. Thank you EIi. She was rewarded with eats from the luncheon, gluten and all.
This is the BEST recap ever.

New Years Day 2010

On New Years Day we drove to Sandy to retrieve Katrina and Mallerie and ended up staying a while. As the day wore on our ideas got crazier and crazier and for the hour Brent was gone giving blood we had a trip planned to Puerto Rico! We would fly on standby using buddy passes the Goulding’s and us. Good thing Brent got home and talked some sense into us because when Sadie checked the flights they were all full.

Instead we left the older girls in charge of the kids and went to a movie. We saw ‘The Blind Side.’ It was nice to see “Sandy” finally get a good roll and any movie that talks about or shows football is a favorite with Matt. So yes, we liked it.

Good-Bye 2009

Katrina and Mallerie were once again in Sandy for New Years Eve but Ava wanted to stay in Heber with the younger kids and see what all the fuss is about. We had a few errands down in Provo. Grayson had somehow gotten home with Adren’s Sunday shoes after their last sleepover so we stopped by the Geertsen’s to drop them off. Grayson went to the door. Paisley answered but couldn’t open it very wide because the chain was on the door. Grayson just pushed the shoes through the crack after which Paisley said “BYE” and shut the door. Lindsey quickly came to the door to see who was there and we chuckled at Paisley’s manners. We headed up the canyon for a nice quiet New Year’s Eve at home. We needed to stop at the store and Matt asked what I wanted for dinner. I said, “I don’t k now but I want the table down low.” He just laughed because he didn’t know what this meant and thought it the most odd request. At home I took the leaves out of the table and set them on #10 cans and put a cloth on top. Callie even sat down low with us as we munched on fruit and steak shish kabobs by candlelight. Above us we had a sheet attached to the four corners of the dining room like a canopy.
Here’s to 2010
